The most enjoyable part of the Challenge experience was the feeling that we coulduse our knowledge and skills to help other people.Introduction Agriculture is the main source of food for many countries as approximately 85% ofthe population are subsistence farmers (farmers who only grow crops for their ownneeds).sometimes a country experiences a dry season (where no rainfall occurs)and a wet season. As a result of these weather conditions, two major problems facethese farmers - droughts during the dry season, where crops dry up or becomestunted in growth, and flash floods during the wet season, where crops are washedaway. Due to this, farmers are only able to plant and harvest once a year betweenthe dry season and the wet seasonThis reduced the country’s food security andhas already led to severe and chronic malnutrition within the population. Other problemsfarmers are facing include low yielding crops, poor soil composition,steep slopes, soil erosion and post-harvest losses due to insects and naturaldecomposition. Predicted factors, such as a rapidly increasing population and climate changeaffecting future rainfall conditions, will greatly reduce food security. With thepassage of time,the population is also increasing. This would place added stress onfood demand. As well as this, climate is also expected to become 1.5°C hotter and10% wetter on average by the year 2050, which would cause further problems withagriculture. If problems are not solved, food security will be greatly reduced due tothe increasing demand for food and the reduction in the number of crops producedeach year. The purpose of this study is to identify possible solutions that may be implementedin these countries, and to suggest a final solution to improve the food security. Thisfinal solution may then be used to help other communities, and help improve thecountry’s food security as a whole. To reduce the effects offloods during the wet season, flood mitigation is required so that crops may not bewashed away. If the two strategies are implemented, farmers would be able togrow crops all year round, increasing their yield and improvingfood security too. An existing solution that has already been implemented sometimes back is the‘Seed of Life’ (SOL) program,which aims to increase food security by increasingthe yields produced by crops. The solution introduces natural crops which producehigher yields per harvest and can withstand the change in climate and poor soilcomposition. The World Food Program has implemented another solution.It has alreadyundertaken the biggest strives for enhanced agricultural production and foodsecurity through their ‘Food for Assets’(FFA) program.
