Technical Functionality The solution mitigates flooding through re-routing the water flow, reducing theaccumulation of water and the washing away of the soil nutrients as the water runsdown the hill. The use of the locally found bamboo sticks will aid in the planning and positioningof the canals, avoiding incorrect placement of canals which may cause the flow ofwater to be directed into an unwanted area and may cause further flooding. Detail of Option 3 Water Tanks The solution of water tanks will be able to cater to communities with water relatedneeds. Water can be stored not only for drinking use (after it has been purifiedusing boiling and filtration processes) but also for bathing, washing clothes andfarming. The water tanks can be constructed within the ground from mud bricks and clay.They will be covered with a lid in order to keep disease carrying organisms anddirt out. Water can be obtained using buckets. For drinking purposes, the watermust first be purified through boiling. Detail of Option 4 ‘Seeds of Life’ The ‘Seed of Life’ (SOL) programaims to increase food security by increasing theyields produced by crops. The solution introduces natural crops, which produce higher yields per harvest and can withstand the change in climate and poor soilcomposition found within the country. Detail of Option 5Fertilisers This solution focuses on addressing the issue of poor soil by using fertiliser toboost the yields in of all the food crops.the use of fertiliser by farmers is sometimesscarce,but, even greater crop yield increases are possible if the minimal amounts offertiliser are used effectively.Option Selection Integrating three different options (options 1, 2 & 3) into one is the finalsolution,involves combining the embankment, canal and water tank system. Theembankment and canals will be used to carry the water from the catchment area,while also acting as barriers for flood prevention. The water will be directed intowater tanks that are installed underground,which will contain a basic filtrationsystem to cleanse the water.Canals are also used as a means for overflowprevention for the water tanks. But selecting the underground option is preferred because the earth is a naturalinsulator and will keep the water cool during summer and warm during winter.
