"FLOOD MITIGATION AND WATER STORAGESUMMARYAs a result of environmental and socio-economic vulnerabilities, the peopleof that place heavily depend on natural resources that are conversely sensitive tochanges in climate. Due to subsistent farming practices, sometimes the countryexperiences a deficit in agricultural production. Resulting susceptibilities to climate change due to hazards such as fierce winds, irregular rainfall patterns andflash floods, have worsened agricultural production and food security. A solution must be created to increase countries current food security as wellas account for conditions which may change in the future. To reduce the effects ofdroughts on crops during the dry season, effective water management must beimplemented so that crops may have enough water to effectively grow during thedry season. Flood mitigation is also required so that crops may not be washedaway. If the abovetwo strategies are implemented, farmers would be able to growcrops all year round, increasing their yield each year and improve their foodsecurity.Rehabilitating small-scale irrigation canals in rural communities, where flashfloods are commonly frequent, have already played a role in slowly aiding thecommunity in terms of food insecurity, however this will not provide sustainableprofit in the long term.A range of alternatives to be implemented were considered. The mostsuitable option was determined by assessing the solution that best delivered the given criteria set in the design requirements, including embankments, irrigationcanals, water tanks, seeds of life and fertilizers. We have deduced to integrate three different design options (options 1, 2 & 3) intoone final solution. That is combining the embankment, canal and water tanksystem. The embankment and canals will be used to divert heavy flood watersaway from the farmlands and the community of that place. Water will bechanneled into water tanks that are installed underground, which will contain abasic filtration system to clean the water. Here,selecting the underground option is preferred because the earth is a naturalinsulator and will keep the water cool during summer and warm during winter. Italso simplifies the system by using gravity as a control for water flowREFLECTION OF TEAM IN THE PROJECTThis project is seen as a great opportunity to express skills in innovative thinkingas engineers in the engineering field. We found the report structure extremelyhelpful and guiding as it provided us with a clear sense of direction. Working in a team meant that roles were equally distributed within the groupwhich enabled a faster approach in completing the overall report."
