Through these, the speed of thewater flow is reduced as both structures are used to block off solids and silt. Due to the water being blocked off, it is forced to move to the sides where it meetsthe entrances of the canals. These canals will then re-route the water flow towardsa line of water tanks embedded into the ground where it can be accessed by thecommunity. In the event that the water tanks are filled, the excess water can be diverted awayusing canals that lead to local rivers, avoiding potential flooding in residentialareas. By re-routing the water flow, damage done to the crops and soil is minimizedduring the wet season while the re-routing systems provide water to be stored inthe tanks mitigating the damage caused by dry weather. This allows the growth of crops through the dry season while fulfilling community needs such as for washingand drinking water. Detailed Description Suppose there are two main distinct seasons in a typical year. During the wetseason, there are excessive amounts of rain causing a loss of crops due to floodingand soil erosion from water accumulation. Similarly, the dry season also has anadverse effect on the livelihood of the crops as there is not enough water to growthe crops. The proposed solution attempts to counter both these problems throughthe use of embankments and a water tank system which then can be used forirrigation or drinking water. The proposed project is intended to provide a solution for food security and climatechange. It does this through the mitigation of floods and storage of water,effectively reducing flooding and providing a water source for the communityduring the dry season. This is essential for the livelihood of crops as crops requirewater throughout the year to be cultivated. However, too much water will cause thecrops to be flooded, detrimental to the already limited food supply The embankments and canals are situated on a hill allowing water to flow downunder gravity without the need for any assistance. Using a rainy day, for example,the rain will firstly fall upon the top of the hill where it travels downwards towards the embankments and gabion blocks. The gabion blocks are used to block off siltand other solids, acting as a barrier to reduce the speed of the water flowingdownwards. In the event that the water tanks are full, the excess water can be diverted awayusing canals which lead to local rivers so that flooding is avoided in residentialareas. Furthermore, to ensure safety for the community, bamboo covers are placedover the top of the water tanks which prevent people and animals from falling intothe tank. Functional description of the proposed solution 1. Rain falls on top of the hill. 2. The water flows down the hill due to gravity. 3. Water runs through the gabion blocks where the water flow has slowed to areduced pace; silt and solids that flowed with the water are blocked off by theblocks. 4. The embankment slows the water flow by blocking it causing water to flow fromthe sides. 5. This water is caught by the entrances of the canals. 6. The water travels through the canals."
