It is crucial to regulate and respond to these environmental factors thatwould immensely contribute to the countering behavior of the materials, as this cansimply arise through negligence to perform regular maintenance operations. Manufacturing Procedure In this design, the community and the environment had to be considered in order tochoose the materials that best suited the project. Taking into consideration, mudbricks were to be used to construct the walls of the embankments, canals and watertanks as they were ecologically friendly, requiring only natural resources andminimal funds to build. Mud bricks are composed of earth with a clay content of 50-80% added with amixture of sand, silt, gravel and carbonates. The carbonates found from limestoneact to harden the bricks. The sand and gravel act as a skeletal frame for the bricks.Sand also limits the extent of cracking caused from shrinkage caused during thedrying process in manufacturing and as well as an expansion that occurs from exposure to moisture. Clay is the key ingredient for mud bricks, acting as a binderand increases the bricks resistance to water erosion. It also heightens the density ofthe bricks.The material ratio in the mixture is significant as too much sand will result in weakand brittle bricks and excessive clay will cause the finished bricks to shrink andcrack under heat. Thus, the ratios of the components must be correct for strongmud bricks with the appropriate resistance to erosion and cracking. Using these materials, they are mixed with water and stabilizing materials such asstraw to make the mud brick mixture less prone to excessive shrinkage bysignificantly improving the tensile strength of the bricks and reducing itsstickiness, allowing easier mixing. The mixture is left to soak overnight. Otheralternatives for stabilizing materials include cutting grass, weeds and tree bark. Discussion Strengths and Weaknesses STRENGTHS 1. Provides a continuous water supply for crops in the dry season by storingwater during the wet season.2. Canals redirect water to avoid water accumulation that can cause soilerosion. 3. Improves soil fertility as the soil nutrients are retained through floodmitigation and irrigation systems using the canals, embankments 4. Participation of the community as labor is needed to dig and repair canals,embankments and water tanks. 5. Through increased agricultural production, excess crops can be exported formoney, which results in a higher economic base as there is less reliance onimports. 6. Usage of local materials which are found in the natural environment withinthe country. 7. Due to mitigation of water accumulation, more vegetation can be grown onthe hillside. 8. Stabilized economy due to a more reliable agricultural sector. WEAKNESSES 1. The surface modification may expose subsoil to low fertility that couldaffect short-term income."
