The person who leads is the one who shows his team a clearvision and crave out a path that he builds and others follow. They are the one whoshows the path and be the inspiration. The clear vision helps people in following thedirection in which the organization needs to achieve, consistent with vision, valuesand strategies. (McGuire, 2008)Effective leaders in health and social care sector emphasizes on safety, high qualityof their services, and compassionate care. They would make sure that the patientvoice is heard at all levels, his experience, concerns, needs are constantly attendedto and proper feedback is provided to them. The qualities of being supportive,empathic and respectful empower their leadership quality. They always promoteparticipation and involve their group and team members. Along with the patients theyalso make sure that staff’s problems and needs are also attended to. They alsomake sure that staffs that work under them are clear about what they need to do andhelps them in their work as well as by giving them advices and guidance. Wheneverthey find any under-performance or any aggressive behaviour from their employees,they are the ones who make sure that there would be proper solution for it. Theywould also be the ones promoting continuous development of knowledge, skills andabilities as to make improvement in them. They also make sure that the decision- making process of the team involves contribution from each member of the team. There is a need for different approaches of leadership that are to be used indevelopment of leadership in this sector. The development of leadership dependsupon experience as well as appropriate skill and ability. There comes the argumentof collective leadership which is the one characterized by shared leadership withformal hierarchy and flow of power. As we all know that health and social care sectorneeds to have leadership that has cooperation across boundaries (both within andoutside) organization. The healthcare must be delivered by this interdependent11 network of organization. It requires the leaders to work together surpassing theeffects of boundaries and work towards the common goal of proper patient care. Thecurrent emphasis on NHS scheme is to develop decision making competencies ofthe front-line staff. The traditional leader centric works were the ones where the oneleading had all the power and was the one responsible for all the decisions. So, aswe talk about new practices for development we need to keep accessing the contextin which it is developed and need to be. (Johnson, 2017)There are various theories associated with leadership and development ofleadership. Some of them are also essential when it comes to the context of healthand social care. In case of Behavioural Theory, the focus is not on leader’s skills, ability or traits buton how they behave in certain situation. According to this theory, leaders are madenot born. This theory divides leaders mainly into two criteria, one who is concernedonly about the tasks and the other who is also concerned about the people who aredoing the work. In case of health and social care sector, behavioural theory can be used fordeveloping leadership. The person who is part of this whole scenario should be ableto behave certain way when it comes to completing any task but they should also notgive up the attention and help their team members require when any kind of crisesoccurs. The whole idea behind this kind of development initiative would be to makethe leader comfortable in dealing with fluctuating situations where there is alwaysrush and problems.Second would be the case of Contingency Theories where there is no focus on anysingle characteristic. It emphasizes on the point that there is never any single way ofleading. Every leader has their own unique way of leading which is based onsituations. But in this case the leaders are most likely to express their opinions onlywhen they think their efforts would be appreciated. Inn case of health and social caresector, this theory is not that much useful as the leaders in such sectors andorganizations cannot be waiting for results before efforts. (Yuki, 1999)Then comes, the Transactional Theory where there is a positive and mutuallybeneficial relationship.
