  • "Henry VHenry V is a great play written by Shakespeare. This play is also the most challengingfor my imagination; because of its huge scene. Before I watched Laurence Oliver’s film, Icould not imagine all the scene by word especially some huge battle scene. Oliver’s filmsurprised me, because of its special shooting method. It used theater scenes and realisticscenes to make this film. The audience would prefer the movie’s version of King Henry everthe plays version, because the movie’s version could be intuitive to bring the characteristics ofthe audience like King Henry V, rather than through the text to imagine; which could give theaudience better story experience.Audience should prefer the film’s version of King Henry ever the play’s version, because the film’s version could bring audiences closest character to Shakespeare's kingHenry.Only by this way, the audience can deeply understand the Shakespeare's play. Differentcharacteristics would bring different experiences, but most of experiences would not beShakespeare’s expectations. The film brings a standard characteristic of King Henry V, andthis characteristics in line with most of the audiences for a positive impression of a king.Moreaudiences will be more likely to accept such a young mature and active king.No matter whattime, people always need a positive person like King Henry V to lead them. For example, Act I Scene 2 line 258 to 259 King said: “What treasure, uncle?” Exeteranswer to King: “Tennis balls, my liege.” This conversation is after the messengers bring the“treasure” from French to England. The King ask his uncle to open the treasure, and his unclefind that the treasure is an insulting gift. In the play, I only imagine the King would be angry after he knew this gift; but in the film, I saw King did not make the behavior of myexpectation. I saw King was silent for a moment and then smiled. In the play, I thought HenryV was a young king, he will not be so calm; but I felt wrong after I watched the film. The filmdirectly shows me Henry V was a mature King, he will not directly show his angry; but as areason to war. This is one of the different places where the movie brings me to play. It makesme deeply understand that Henry V is a young and smart King. I put more attention on theword in the play, but in film I more focus on the picture. In Act I Scene 2 line 2 line 299 to 302. After the ambassadors exit to the stage, theExeter said to King: “This is a merry message.” The King answer that: “We hope to make thesender blush at it. Therefore, my lords, omit no happy hour that may give furth’rance to ourexpedition…” Actually, the Exeter and other peoples felt happy, because this “treasure” is agood chance to have a legitimate reason to invade France. Then, the King said they should notbe that happy. As an audience, I think the King looks not that happy, because they still have alot of things need to do. That is what I could imagine from the words in the play. After Iwatched film, I find that I was wrong again. The film showed that the king looked very happy, and even the head of the crown were he casually throw. Oliver performed the King looks veryconfident and get what he wants. For audience, they have different imaginations bythemselves. It might be small part of audiences imagine same things with the film’s version. That is the main different between film and play. The film could make all of the audienceshave same feelings for the King Henry V. It could make us understand what is thecharacteristic of the King that Shakespeare wrote in the play. We could deeply understand thewhole story and what Shakespeare truly wanted to tell us after we understand the King’scharacteristic. "
