In other words, social class refers to a group ofpeople with common levels of wealth, influence, and status. It can also be referred as a groupof individuals in the society with common economic, cultural and political status. Socialstratification defines the existing structured inequalities between different groupings ofpeople. In a socially diverse society, social inequality exists with the tendency of particulargroups of individuals in the same social class trying to participate together in both formal andinformal perspective. In Nigeria today, the society is classified into different social classes. Nigeria is the largestand the most populous region among all the British West African territories has a populationexceeding 170 million people. In this country, the social structure is substantially affected bythe existing traditional patterns of life and the current political alterations. Nigeria is one ofthe Africa territories undergoing a relatively significant social change seen as the influence ofthe urban society began to modify the old traditional framework in which the Nigerian peoplehave been structured to live for centuries. As the Urban population exceedingly continues tostabilize, the different social class structure tends to appear. The existing differences inwealth, education, position, and occupation give rise to some social statuses. Nigeria being aheterogeneous society, its population is usually divided into four different social class layers.Firstly, we have the upper class comprising of 1 to 3 % of its population (Argyle, 2012). Theupper class includes those people with great wealth, significant investments, and businessventures. Aristocratic and high society families who are extremely wealthy and rich for manygenerations also belong to this class. Due to high status, the Upper-class society is more prestigious than the lower-class society. Likely, these groups exercise lots of influence andpower over the other groups both nationally and globally. Secondly, we have the middle classalso referred to as the white-collar workers. Social class within this group exists at differentlevels based on their wealth, education, and prestige. It includes; people with medium levelincome such as managers, small business owners, lawyers, doctors among other groups(Adeleke, Bamidele & Omokeji, 2014). In addition to that, we have the working class, also referred to as the working poor,comprising of less educated people who mostly engage in manual jobs with little or noprestigious status. This group consisting of less skilled workers who are generally underpaidwith little opportunity for career advancement. People in this group includes; secretaries,computer technicians among other groups. Lastly is the lower class, a group characterized bydeep poverty, homelessness and high rate of unemployment ("Social Class, Social Change,and Poverty - Science NetLinks,” 2017). Many people in this class have less or no access tomedical care, housing, food, clothing, and safety. This social class is also referred as theunderclass people, a majority of whom have many children in their families; it is the societythat harbors drug abusers, criminals among other individuals in the society as portrayed bythe media. Social class evolution describes how different sets of social classes change over time. In earlyperiods of colonization, a majority of people in Nigeria lived in farming villages as ruraldwellers. They were ruled by chiefs who were highly respected for their prestige and power.In 1980’s and 1990’s during the period of high industrialization, better marketing proceduresand infrastructure produced significant social change that was missing during the earlydecades of independence. Many rural people got in touch with urban life to seek for betterjobs. With different income levels among the people, a great social status occurred.
