Justification of the need for the programme

Basic life support course includes essential life saving techniques regarding management of choking, bleeding and shock (Rao, 2009). This course helps to meet necessary health and safety standards in workplace. It is a level of first aid training that may save someone's life in emergency situation. In case of a victim who appears to be chocked, drowned, and suffered from cardiac pain proper use of these techniques might save their life. All these techniques are developed to provide victims an essential preliminary treatment whenever needed. This programme is essential for healthcare workers as they are dealing with various types of patients and may face this type of challenges at any time. As opined by Rao (2011), above 50% death case due to heart attack outside the hospitals could be recovered by using appropriate BLS techniques. Basic level BLS course involve securing proper circulation and breathing to keep their heart active until arrival of an ambulance. CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) technique is introduced in BLS training that helps to provide preliminary treatment to the victims (Erickson, Peters, & Strommer, 2009). Sudden blockage in heart can be opened by using CPR technique. BLS includes all types of first aid training courses for each particular case. This training also helps to learn about other important measures like position of recovery and use of AED (automated external defibrillation) device that improves lethal effects in cardiac blockage cases. In case of a drowning person airway treatment is immediately needed to maintain a clear pathway for gases to pass between lungs and atmosphere. This training includes early recognition of the emergency that helps the healthcare staffs to activate emergency medical services quickly. Unconscious victim can regain consciousness after application of AED. Medical emergencies can arise at any time and any place. Hence, BLS help care staffs to deal with medical emergencies and provide pre-hospital care.
