You have been working for a small family-owned construction firm. Much of the work of this firm has been in private residential work, but under new management there is a desire to begin to undertake larger scale non-domestic work such as warehouse, factory and shopping centre construction. In order for this change to be managed effectively, the company will need to change its structure. The management team recognises a relationship between the structure of the company and the relationships that they may form, through contracts, tendering and other activities.
You have been asked to prepare a report on the different options available to the company, in terms of company structure, and the benefits and/or challenges that the options present.
Your report should include the following:
• Considering the UK construction industry, explain how the industry has developed and encompassed professionalism within its structures. Your explanation should include historical development of the industry, professional and other institutes including societies.
• An explanation to demonstrate the scope and linkage between all parties (professional, technical and skills professionals) within a construction organisation. Contractor and head office structure, as well as, site structure and organisation should also be included. Illustrations should be submitted with your explanations.
• Explanation to identify the types of contractual work tendered by contractors.
• A description of the different types of company structures/types, and the key features of the different types.
• An explanation of the different types of relationship that may exist between companies working on construction projects, including contract types that are based on these relationships.
